Here’s a map that will help you visualize all the areas of Guangzhou that I will be talking about in this post:

1. Tianhe – the best place to stay in Guangzhou for first-timers

City skyline with modern skyscrapers and a distinctive white, curved architectural building on the waterfront under a blue sky.

The Tianhe neighborhood in Guangzhou is one of the most developed and commercialized areas in China. If you want to experience the modern side of Guangzhou, Tianhe is the spot, especially for first-timers!

What sets Tianhe apart is its super large pedestrian street (map) with the best view of the skyscrapers and tons of shopping opportunities! It really is one of the best sights that you’ll get during your stay in Guangzhou city!

The big tall buildings can only mean that this is the commercial business district of the town. Tianhe District is also home to a few shopping centers, so you can add that to your to-do list as well!

FUN FACT: Guangzhou is home to the largest wholesale market in the world, and it’s a central city in China for entrepreneurs and business owners who buy wholesale products!

The main attractions in this area also include the Zhujiang New Town area (map) with its skyscrapers and the massive Huacheng Square (map), the Guangdong Museum with regional art, and the Guangzhou Opera House (map)!

Aerial view of a large plaza with a circular fountain centerpiece, surrounded by trees and bustling with pedestrians. Steps lead up to and from the plaza.

GETTING AROUND: The Guangzhou metro is the best way to get around town! It has 16 lines, and 3 big ones (Lines 1, 3, and APM) pass in Tianhe. Metro is really cheap as well, and the ride from the airport to Tianhe is just over US$1 (ticket fare depends on the distance traveled). For longer stays, consider a Yang Cheng Tong transport card you can buy and top up at any metro station or 7-Eleven store. Install Alipay on your phone before arriving in China and link it to your credit card. You can pay for everything, including public transport, with this app.

You can also use the BRT public buses and taxis, just please avoid all of those during rush hour (7 AM to 9 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM), it gets absolutely hectic. Finally, the East Railway Station in Northern Tianhe (map) is your main connection to Hong Kong if you’re planning a stop there! There are tons of hotels around the railway station, too!

TIP: Baidu (iOS, Android) is your best friend when traveling to China! Use the maps service to track your taxi ride or plan your commute, and the translator feature for communicating and reading signs in Chinese. They have an English user interface; what a lifesaver! Also, Apple Maps works better than Google Maps for finding restaurants and street directions.

The Tianhe district is also a bit more expensive than the rest, so be ready to pay a little more if you want to stay in a good hotel. Do note that Airbnb doesn’t operate in China anymore.

Luxury hotel

I love the futuristic design of this luxury Tianhe hotel! The rooms have ceiling-to-floor windows so you can admire the city views from the moment you open your eyes! Swim in their cool pool and relax in the spa center. The Four Seasons Hotel also has a bar and family rooms for those with kids.

2. Yuexiu – where to stay in Guangzhou for history buffs

A stone sculpture of five goats stands prominently in a park surrounded by trees and vibrant red flowers. Two people with an umbrella walk nearby.

Central location? Check. Historical background? Check. Modern shopping areas? Check! Yuexiu District has everything you need for a perfect holiday in Guangzhou!

Guangzhou was the country’s capital city not only once but 3 times throughout history!

Back in the day, Yuexiu District housed Guangzhou’s old city walls. Although most of the city walls were destroyed in the 20th century, there’s still a small portion left in Yuexiu Park (map), which I highly recommend visiting as it’s the town’s largest park.

Like any other city center, Yuexiu District has attractions that will keep you as busy as a bee! The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (map) and Dafo Temple (map) are 2 of the most important ones built in the 6th century.

The Sun Yat-Sen’s Memorial Hall (map) and Sacred Heart Cathedral (map) are also stunning pieces of architecture that you shouldn’t miss either. The 19th-century Heart Cathedral will transport you to Paris in an instant, as it’s so similar to Notre Dame!

A bustling street scene with people walking under the shade of trees. The area is lined with shops and signage, and fallen leaves are scattered on the pavement.

But what’s a holiday without a bit of shopping? Beijing Road Pedestrian Street (map) is the largest shopping alley in Guangzhou, China and it’s located right in Yuexiu District! So grab your purse and start treating yourself!

NOTE: Just North of Yuexiu starts Baiyun District, one of the largest ones of Guangzhou that’s also home to the international airport. Consider staying there if you’re visiting for business, on a budget, or have a short layover.

Personally, after a long day of exploring a new city, like Guangzhou, all I want to do is crash in my bed, and it should be one that’s super comfortable! You’ll find many awesome places to stay in this district, from luxury to budget, but I would make sure I book them in advance since everyone will want to stay in such a charming location

3. Liwan – best area to stay in Guangzhou for food and shopping

Aerial view of a cityscape with numerous tall buildings surrounding a large park featuring ponds, trees, and a bridge.

Located on the West bank of Pearl River, this Guangzhou area is super charming. It has the perfect mix of the old and new and urban and traditional, with some of the most popular pedestrian streets and temples. This is why I call it the coolest place to stay in Guangzhou, where you can experience everything at once!

The area’s colonial architecture and the old houses will make history lovers so happy when they see that not all the districts were modernized.

This is where you’ll find Shamian Island (map), the colonial neighborhood in Guangzhou city that every visitor wants to see. With cobblestone streets and the familiar colonial architecture, you get yourself a small corner of Europe in the heart of Guangzhou!

For the foodies and shopaholics, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street (map) is the place to go! This huge street is lined up with stores and restaurants! From fun restos to street performances to 300+ shops, this street is alive day and night! Just remember to haggle for prices if you plan to shop here!

Visitors explore a traditional Chinese courtyard adorned with decorative roof sculptures and red lanterns.

The Chinese like to joke that when you go out for a walk at night, you’ll lose your money and gain weight. That’s exactly what’ll happen at the fun-filled Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street from all the shopping and dining opportunities!

By the way, Guangzhou is known for its Cantonese specialty cuisine, so make sure to eat in local restaurants while you’re here!

SAFETY: Talking about losing money, Guangzhou is actually super safe, even for solo female travelers. The locals will give you some looks but only out of curiosity, and they may even ask you to take a picture with them. Petty crime is almost nonexistent.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (map) is another one of the top attractions in the city that’s located in the Liwan district. It was built as a training facility for students, but it also has an ancestral shrine and is now home to a folk museum. You’ll see tons of intricate artwork and interesting exhibitions here, so definitely add this spot to your itinerary regardless of where you stay!

And if you want to spend some time outdoors, head over to Liwan Lake Park (map) and get a break from all the city noise. As you can see, the Liwan District has something to do for every type of traveler!

4. Haizhu – best place to stay in Guangzhou for the Canton Fair

Observation wheel with glass cabins on a tower with cityscape in the background.

Suppose you’re planning to attend the Canton Fair, the oldest and biggest trade fair in China held every year in autumn and spring since 1957. In that case, I recommend finding places to stay in Haizhu District, which is located 8 km (5 miles) Southwest of Tianhe District.

Every year, the Canton Fair held at the Pazhou International Exhibition Center gathers thousands of business travelers and buyers from all around the world!

You’ll find the Pazhou International Exhibition Center (map) on the South bank of Pearl River. The area around it is quite industrial; however, it is home to one of the most fascinating buildings in Guangzhou: the Canton Tower (map, named after the fair).

At 610 m (2,000 ft) high, Canton Tower is one of the tallest towers in the world, second only to the Skytree in Tokyo! Definitely worth seeing both from the ground and on the inside! Visit the top of the Canton Tower and check out the incredible views. It has a 360-degree observation deck with a rotating Ferris wheel and a skywalk!

TIP: Schedule your visit on a sunny and clear day. The ticket for the skywalk and Ferris wheel is kind of expensive (around US$30 at the time of writing), so you want to make sure it’ll be worth it!

I highly recommend booking your hotels near the Pazhou International Exhibition Center in advance if you plan to come during the Canton Fair time. Everyone will be looking for a room there, and you don’t want to miss out on the best deals!s everyone will be looking to find a room there and you don’t want to miss out!

5. Panyu District – where to stay in Guangzhou for families

Three pandas sit on ice, eating carrots and bamboo in an enclosure at Chimelong Safari Park.

Located 25 km (15.5 miles) Southeast of Guangzhou Tianhe District, this area is perfect for families who want a more tranquil setting during their trip to China. Given that it’s located a bit further away from the central part of the city, you won’t experience the hustle and bustle that some find a bit too overwhelming.

Don’t worry, though, there are many things that will keep you and the kids entertained in Panyu District! Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park (map) will probably be the first stop on your itinerary! The park is home to some cute animals like panda bears and giraffes, so definitely prepare because it will be hard to convince the little ones to leave this place.

But I’m sure they’ll be ready to say goodbye to the cute animals once they hear about the Chimelong Paradise, which is the largest amusement park in China! Yep, Panyu really holds the recipe for the perfect family trip!

My personal favorite, however, is the Baomo Garden (map) a bit further South. This quiet garden dates from the 18th century and it’s adorned with traditional Chinese landscaping with tons of cultural elements, winding paths, ponds, turtles, and bonsai trees. There’s no better place to go for a serene walk during the sunset!

If you still want to spend some time in the center of Guangzhou, you can always use public transport to get around! Guangzhou is definitely much easier to visit now than it was 20 years ago!
